MINT experience during the vacations

14 schoolgirls from all over Bavaria spent two days with TUM.Additive and the Professorship of Laser-based Additive Manufacturing to learn about 3D printing. Together we designed, sliced and printed individual puzzles to take home.

At the end of the Easter break, 14 schoolgirls from all over Bavaria came to the Advanced Manufacturing Campus in Garching to learn more about 3D printing. The hosts were TUM.Additive and the Chair of Laser-based Additive Manufacturing with Prof. Katrin Wudy and Jennifer John.

The students started directly with an introduction to Fusion 360 and learned the basics of construction. The aim was to construct a puzzle. The many creative ideas were first recorded on paper. Then it started: the puzzles slowly took shape digitally in 3D. Layers were rotated, cylinders extruded and, at the end, even their own name was added. After slicing, the puzzles were ready to be printed - in many different colors. Accompanied by the exploreTUM team, the students then went to the hotel after a movie night. The next day, we were able to remove the finished puzzles and try them out. A bit of reworking was necessary to ensure that everything fitted together well. Prof. Wudy gave a final lecture on the other 3D printing processes. She showed some application examples from industry, but also a sample print from research here at TUM. The students were then able to see the various processes and the associated machines during a guided tour.
